The Adventures of Tom Bombadil

2012 will be the 50th anniversary of
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
A collection of 16 poems, 2 of which feature the character Tom Bombadil. Other poems appear as part of the narrative in ‘The Lord of the Rings’. ‘Errantry’ where Tolkien uses an unusual poetic meter consisting of trisyllabic assonances. This developed into ‘Earendil the Mariner’ that appears in ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ where an excerpt from ‘The Man in the Moon came down too soon’ also features. ‘Stone Troll’ and ‘Oliphaunt’ also appear and are present as examples of ‘hobbit poetry’.

Posted on behalf of Tolkien Society member Ian Spittlehouse.

Will one of the poems in
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
inspire you to write a paper, a play, create a costume or something else for Return of the Ring?
